5 "Must Do" End of the Season Rides

A Highlight of Western Washington's Best Riding Roads

This year’s summer has proven to be one of the best that we have had in a long time. If you’re a fair weather rider, then you haven't had to check the next day’s forecast before heading off to work on the bike for the past two months. If you know Washington’s climate, it's probably already in the back of your mind that we have about a month and half left of decent riding weather before it’s either time to think about winterization or throwing on the winter tires. No matter the choice, take this opportunity to ride a few of Western Washington’s best riding roads during this beautiful season, one of which will soon be closed and not made available until next spring.

1.    North Cascade HWY

Typically closed between the months of November and spring, SR20 is one of the most breath taking rides the Pacific Northwest has to offer in the scenic department. Follow the Skagit River for nearly 130 miles and Washington State, guaranteed, will have a whole new meaning.

2.  Snoqualmie Valley HWY

Looking for a local spot to exploit some of your bike’s potential? There is a reason the Snoqualmie Valley HWY has become so well known to motorcyclists around. Roads leading off of the highway such as Highbridge, Ben Howard and Ames Lake are full of sweepers for the liter bikes mixed in with tight corners motard riders will appreciate. A word of caution; watch for road maintenance around blind corners and gravel near the shoulders.

3.    Neah Bay

One of the best locations to combine a scenic ride with a variety of tasty options for lunch is highway 112 along the coastline. Not only do you get to enjoy ocean views, lush landscaping abides along the drive. Drop into Port Angeles or Neah Bay, depending on the direction of travel, and you will have a selection of wonderful food choices.

4.    Mercer Island Loop

One of the most relaxing rides after a long day of work is the Mercer Island loop. Off of Mercer Way, turn left and follow Mercer Loop its entirety until you reach I90 again. While by no means a fast paced loop, it is full of tight, back-to-back, sweepers that help you build form and confidence.

5.    HWY 2- Leavenworth

Highway 2 combines a pretty ride through the trees to a wonderful gathering spot, Leavenworth. Have a Bavarian style lunch and on the way back, take Chumstick HWY and wind your way back west.
